ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sam Guida (he/him) is currently living in Duluth Minnesota working as a freelance naturalist. He has always enjoyed spending time outdoors and helping people explore the world around them. This led him to the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center Naturalist Training Program after completing his B.A.s in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies from the University of Minnesota Morris.

 

One day when wandering the Wolf Ridge driveway, Sam noticed a funny bump on a willow tree. After some investigation, (and dissection) it turned out to be a gall caused by a tiny critter with a huge name; a Willow Beaked Gall Midge. This opened the rabbit hole to Sam’s journey into the world of galls, and he has been finding lumps on leaves, funny shaped flowers and spots on twigs ever since. Sam also enjoys eating things he finds outside, cross country skiing, gardening, power naps on the couch, and taking Rowan The Cat on walks

 

He has also partnered with a number of organizations to host gall workshops to help people discover the lilliputian world of galls including The Sax-Zim Bog, Pompeys Pillar National Monument, Minnesota Master Naturalists, and, The KAXE Phenology Show.  He has also received a MS in Environmental Education from Antioch University New England.
